Q&A
What
do you teach?
We teach mid 1950’s Rock ‘n’ Roll. This style is a little
different to the style that had developed by the late 1950’s. It
is the 6 beat style that was introduced into Britain with the film Rock
Around The Clock.
How
do you teach?
Before each Record Hop we hold a session dedicated to beginners only.
We ask beginners to arrive between 7:15pm and 7.30pm to give them a chance
to learn and practise moves before people start arriving for the record
hop. By doing this you can learn and practice safe in the knowledge that
everyone else around you is in the same boat. By the time the record hop
starts you’ll be feeling confident enough to join in with the regulars.
We also occasionally hold evenings that are restricted to beginners only.
These are great fun and you’ll have the time to learn a number of
new moves in one evening should you wish to do so, or you can just spend
the time perfecting what you’ve already learnt.
Is
it difficult?
As with learning anything new you will need to put in some effort and
not expect too much of yourself too quickly. We start with the basic 6
beat move. It’s really simple once you get the hang of it, but it
will take a little while to perfect. The effort though is well worth it
as virtually all the other moves that you will learn are based on this
move, so once you’ve mastered the basics, you’ll progress
very quickly.
What
if I miss a session?
Because
we teach each move individually (i.e. we don’t teach routines),
if you miss a session you won’t miss out. We keep a progress record
for each beginner so we know exactly what moves you’ve learnt and
which ones we still need to teach you. Moves are split into two sections.
You’ll start on the beginner’s section that will teach you
a wide variety of different moves. Once you’ve completed this section,
you’ll receive a certificate detailing all the moves you’ve
learnt along with something nice to drink or eat to help you to celebrate.
You’ll then move onto the intermediate section where you’ll
learn some variations to the moves you’ve already learnt plus some
pretty flashy but more complicated moves to really impress your friends
with!
Will
I be made to dance with different partners?
Absolutely
not. If you only want to dance with your own partner that’s fine
with us. If you want to dance with lots of different people that’s
fine too. We want you to enjoy learning to dance so we’ll never
force you to do anything you don’t want to do. Once you’re
confident with your dancing you’ll enjoy dancing with lots of different
people, but we appreciate that it’s quite different when you’re
still learning.
What
do I wear?
Whatever you are comfortable in. Some people like to wear 50’s style
clothes, either original, reproduction or simply 50’s looking, some
don’t. Some dress smartly, others casually. Whatever you choose,
you do need to be comfortable and able to move, remember you’ll
be doing lots of spins and turns so you don’t want to wear anything
that is going to restrict your movements. Trainers may look great with
jeans but for dancing they’re too heavy and sticky, and although
ladies will agree that stilettos will make your outfit look great, they’re
not so great to learn Rock ‘n’ Roll in. Light, flat or low
heeled shoes are best.
Why
do you teach?
The answer is simple. We love dancing and love to give others the opportunity
to experience the same fun that we do. By the way, the music’s great
too ?
